Tea, coffee, and drinking chocolate - the three hot pleasurable drinks

In the 17th century, maritime trade between Europe and the rest of the world intensified. As a result, not only large quantities of East Asian porcelain reached the West, but also tea, as well as coffee and drinking chocolate from Central and South America. Seen as absolute luxury goods during the baroque period, they required the finest of porcelain to be consumed with proper decorum – a soaring demand which led to the founding of Europe’s first porcelain manufactory in Meissen in 1710. What followed thereafter was an increasing variety of service shapes and decorations that would decisively shape the face of European dining and tableware.

What role do the three pleasurable drinks play in the history of porcelain? Why is the teapot round and the coffee pot pear-shaped? What is a cup of “flower coffee? During the event, the histories of the three pleasurable drinks will be illuminated, illustrating their influence on the development of Meissen porcelain.

An engaging historical introduction is followed by tasting of tea, coffee and drinking chocolate with corresponding Meissen porcelain. In addition, a delectably laid table of homemade cakes, tortes, and coffee pralines is served at Café Meissen.
